Winter Camp 2009, Gilwell Park - January 2009

It was only the second weekend in January, but Friday, 9th Januart saw two Leaders putting up tents on a cold Gilwell Park. When the intrepid Explorer Scouts and Scouts arrived later that evening they has the luxury of not having to put up their tents, and a warm tent to sit in courtesy of Les's propane heater. The temperature apparently dropped to minus six overnight. After a cooked breakfast on Saturday morning the Scouts and Explorers ventured off to try out the activities such as air rifles, 3G swing, fairground rides and may others. The temperature didn't rise above minus two all day, but at least it meant that the campsite didn't turn into a sea of mud like previous years! The evening saw the Leaders watching a film, they weren't overly bothered about what it was about, just that they could sit in the warm for a couple of hours! Sunday morning came and all the tents were packed and loaded before the temperature started to rise and the ground started to turn muddy. On balance I think the cold was preferable to the mud, but it was a close run thing!
