Nuclear Bunker Sleepover - February 2011

It was 6.30 and dark when we all arrived in the car park. Carrying our stuff we headed down the hill, along a muddy track, through the gate, and into the entrance of the bunker. We stowed our gear and went off out again into the dark, down another hill and in through a door at the bottom of the bunker. There we split into groups and got ourselves a wand (information guide). In our groups we walked around the entire bunker looking at all sorts of things; there were machine guns, gas masks and manikins on typewriters. It was very eerie with lots of manikins dressed in army gear or office gear, there were even manikins in the beds.

When we finished our tour we had a quick snack; then it was off again to do activities, my favourite was the quasar on the bottom floor. We split into teams and had a different room each as a base; the leaders turned the lights off and it was really scary but great!! The other activities were good too. I wasn't very good at the archery, but ok on the air rifles. The abseiling was a bit scary, but once I went over the edge it was really fun.

"Calm down time" came round too quick, but it was nice to sit down. We watched Despicable Me and had a burger. Then it was time for bed, it took a while for everyone to settle (about 3ish!!!). Morning came with Akela waking us up. We then had an hour of wide games, this was "Detonate the bomb". We split into teams again and had to find three things across the different floors; first we had to find a stamp, then a balloon (bomb) and lastly we had to safely detonate the bomb. This sounds easy but we had to find the leaders for each and they were hiding throughout the bunker in all sorts of places, like in the dormitories in a bed, in amongst the manikins, they also dressed up in costumes. Emma hid in amongst a family of manikins pretending to be one and eating biscuits. The hour went quick and it was time for breakfast, bacon and sausages, yummy!! I had two.

We played some more wide games for another hour and then it was time to go home. I was very tired but had had a fantastic time.
