Scouts & Explorers Peak District Trip, Gradbach - October 2007

Following on from the success of last years trip, Friday evening saw 25 Scouts and Explorers pack into a number of vehicles for the trip north to Gradbach. On arrival at the campsite it was time to organise the sleeping arrangements in the farmhouse before eating our supper followed by bed. The morning saw us awake to low cloud and misty rain. This didn't deter us as six groups of walkers set off, all scheduled to arrive at the Roaches for some rock climbing at intervals during the day. Unfortunately the low cloud and mist did not clear all day so we were unable to enjoy the spectacular views. Despite the rock being damp and greasy, a variety of climbs were tried. After a filling meal of 'Climbers Stew' , the evening's entertainment saw much hilarity as, with the aid of tins of baked beans, a matchbox and a table, saw us attempt a number of unusual games! It was then supper and time for bed. Sunday morning saw better weather at Gradbach. Following breakfast and tidying the farmhouse we departed for Dovedale for our days group walk. With some of the drivers cursing Peter's satellite navigation we headed down narrow winding lanes and a ford towards Dovedale. Unfortunately the weather deteriorated as we left Gradbach and headed east. So in similar weather to the day before we all set off on the bottom section of Dovedale. After stopping for lunch in the shelter of a cave we invested two of the Explorer Scouts into the District and presented them with their scarves. It was then a short walk to the end of the dale where some of us enjoyed an icecream before departing on the journey home. Its already booked for next year, so put it in your diary.
